Venâncio, Henrique; Bianchi, Renata Alexandre; Lobato, Thaís Oliveira Santos; Sampaio, Marcus Vinícius; Santos, Jean Carlos.
The establishment of invasive plants negatively affects natural environments. Invasive herbivores that attack weeds can be used as a form of biological control, but natural enemies of herbivores must be associated with this interaction to prevent the invasive phytophagous from become a local pest. We performed a greenhouse experiment to evaluate how the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, a ok and invasive herbivore, affects the performance of the weed Tithonia diversifolia, the Mexican sunflower. We also examined the relationship between the aphid and local natural enemies. Seedlings of T. diversifolia were divided in two groups: one infested by the aphid and another not infested. After 22 days, we assessed the relationship between aphid abundance and the...

Twelve years of “Astro” in Sergipe State: in search of harmony between the manatee and the local waterside communities - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i4.10158 Biological Sciences
Foppel, Ernesto Frederico da Costa; Instituto Mamíferos Aquáticos; Ferrari, Stephen Francis.
The Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus) is the most threatened aquatic mammal in Brazil. It was considered to be extinct in Sergipe until 1998, when a re-introduced animal (Astro) arrived. Given plans for the re-introduction of more animals, a survey was conducted of the waterside communities of the animal’s home range, on the southern coast of Sergipe. Between March and November, 2009, 27 people were interviewed in 12 communities, using a 14-item questionnaire. All the interviewees knew Astro and were familiar with his behaviour. The primary source of tension between the animal and the community is its habit of approaching vessels and, in particular, fishing equipment. Some fishermen reported that he takes fish from their nets. While most local...

Um novo método para análise de conteúdo estomacal de peixes Biological Sciences
Lima Junior, Sidnei Eduardo; UEMS; Goitein, Roberto; UNESP.

Upper Paraná River floodplain fishermen’s traditional ecological knowledge: fishermen’s ecological feeling Biological Sciences
Carvalho, Adriana Rosa; UEG.
The ecological knowledge is an empiric popular wisdom stored by the fishermen’s natural environmental practice. Changes in ecosystem affect the explored natural resources as well as the traditional practice dependent on them. This paper aims at presenting the upper Paraná river floodplain fishermen’s traditional ecological knowledge from Porto Rico (PR) and Porto São José (PR) regions. A brief comment on fragmentation theory is presented because of the floodplain fragmentation imposed by the construction of hydroelectric dams. Three phrases and one proverb, which reveal the dynamics of the fishermen’s ecological process, were registered and confronted with the scientific knowledge of the region. The phrases show a popular and traditional interpretation in...
